Woody’s Journey: Where It All Began

A little over a month ago, I reached out to a breeder to ask if they would be interested in donating to Lydia’s Hope a puppy who could be trained as a therapy dog. I fully expected her to respond (or not respond) the same way others had. Not only did she actually respond, but she said, “why yes, we decided you could have one from this current litter, can you pick up on Friday”? I was in shock. I was thinking, hoping, maybe next spring, but no, we had a puppy ready to be donated now!! Was I ready? Can I even handle a puppy? What was I thinking asking now?

I had always dreamed of having a therapy dog! And now, the dream was becoming a reality. I even hesitated and back tracked a little, but eventually went and picked up this ball of energy we now call Woody. He came into our home and adapted very quickly. Within about two weeks, he was sleeping through the night and eating like a champ!

The next hurdle was training. We knew that in order to have an “official” therapy dog, he would have to be certified and that would require professional training! As a new non-profit, funding for this type of training was limited, so I reached out to my board for suggestions. Luckily, a board member knew of an amazing trainer in the area and reached out to them about training. Thankfully, they agreed to donate Woody’s training so that he could serve his community well in the coming days and months.

I am learning so many things as we are all adjusting to a new “baby” in the house. He has to learn our house rules and what is expected of him. This isn’t much different for homes who welcome new children. Often the reality of having a little in your home, learning your house rules, adjusting to how you do things, can be challenging. I’d be lying if I did not say that there are moments when I question my sanity in taking on this new pup! It’s hard and requires a lot of work! The training for Woody, well, let’s be real, it’s really training for ME!

So, let me encourage you that the journey you are on, though difficult, will be rewarding. In the end, children are way more valuable than puppies. And the connections you make now can sow seeds for the future! The reward is often found later, but stick with it! And remember, you do not have to make the journey alone.

Thank you Lolly-Doodles Labs and Doodles and Elite Canine Training for your commitment to serving our community through your generous donations to Lydia’s Hope.
